Congratulations to Teal Stanley from
Greensboro, NC for winning the 2013 Mayberry Days Checker Trophy! Only
seven players signed up to play out of maybe 14 who just wanted to come in and
play their friendly game and pass the time. Dennis Beal paired us up as a
double elimination round robin. Dennis had another event running parallel
to the checker tournament so he let us pair ourselves. I have the
cross-table below. The young boy dropped out after his first round and
George Randall was eliminated by the third round, and Grover Minor was out on
the forth round. Mike eliminated Travis in the seventh round and Teal also
eliminated JR, so Mike and Teal played for their championship game. Teal
Stanley won over
Mike Ross for the 2013 Chester Jones Open Checker Tournament Trophy. Grover
Minor and George Randall played each other as the 4 of us finished out the
tournament. I played Grover several game after being eliminated from the
contest. Two photographers were taking pictures through out the contest
and I will post those pictures when they are released. After the tournament we
all (Stanley family & Ross family and myself) enjoyed Mayberry and all its
attractions; the Mayberry characters, musicians, stores, sidewalk vendors,
restaurants, 5 Barney's patrol cars and shops
that make up downtown main street Mount Airy. And of course a hot dog, or pork
chop sandwich from Snappy Lunch, or you may choose Barney's Cafe, Bluebird Diner
or Leon's Burger Express which all are located on main. Leon's has the
best cheeseburger. We decided on Walker's Soda Fountain for a couple of
hotdogs, chips, pickle, & a cheerwine.
